ROCK IS DEAD! Is what many have come to believe in this new generation of popular music; leaving many calling on the way-pavers of past generations for that hit of rock & roll adrenaline. However, your new favorite band may just be hiding out, jamming in a local dive bar, waiting to be discovered. It’s through this subsection that we hope to help you find them. With that, here is our first official Bell Works Band of the Week!
Don’t you just hate it when a gaggle of hippies congregate on your front lawn!? New band of the week “Moon Rules Apply” knows the feeling all too well. Their fist and only album, titled “Too Many Damn Hippies on my Lawn” is a rollercoaster ride through the past. It emulates their 90’s centric style with a grungy feel that resurrects the spirit of bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. The album also features sounds reminiscent of the punk era and even ska in their song “where it really hurts” which at times reminded us of something you may hear at a Sublime concert, all the while incorporating their own unique style. The album in itself is a journey and in our opinion it’s a journey well worth taking.
Their most popular song, titled “Office Papers”, is a fitting introduction to the bands overall sound and style. Singer/guitarist, Andre Holman leads us into the song with a Hendrix esque riff making great use of the wah-pedal. Following his introduction is an explosion of instrumentals from drummer, Ryan Weaver and Bassist, Logan Stogentin. Weaver brings a powerful, energetic sound that propels the song at the listener while Stogentin backs the guitar with rhythm thick enough to cut through, leaving the song with an overall deep and heavy feel.
The Band released their first single, “Hate it”, in 2022. The song holds the fierce and angsty spirit of a band looking to establish their name in the ever-present world of Rock & Roll. Soon after followed “Office Papers” which was released as a single in 2023 before being added to their album which released in the same year. Their latest single, “Grain”, takes a deeper feel, showing their creative growth over the last two years. With lyrics such as “Bit through my fingers and stretched myself out, I lay on the floor and begin to shout”, the song takes the listener to a place of deeper emotion than most are willing to allow themselves to express. “Grain” features an infectious melody while bouncing between soft and melodic to heavy and guttural.
The hard rocking gentlemen of “Moon Rules Apply” took us on a ride that we won’t soon forget and have without a doubt made lifelong fans out of us here at Bell Works. These rowdy rockers seem to really know what making music is all about which is why we felt they were the best and only option for our fist official New Band of the Week! l
